Mohsen Abou El Azm is one of Egypt's best living satirical painters and social expressionists. Born in Fayoum in 1958, he graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Cairo and is best known for his almost caricature-like paintings depicting scenes from the daily lives of Egyptians. He has painted variations on this theme since the early 1980s and has produced over 200 paintings. One of the most recognised and respected names in his field, Abou El Azm is an expressionist who uses his art as a vehicle of social criticism. His dynamic and colourful composition generally portrays distorted and exaggerated human characters in mundane situations. He translates his deep knowledge and love of the Egyptian character into witty, sarcastic works, transmitting powerful emotions to the viewer. He currently lives and works in Cairo.
